Morgan Roy Turk is the local veteran of the week. He graduated from Mercer University in 1956 and received a regular U.S. Army commission as a second lieutenant in January of 1957. He had assignments in Fort Lee, Va., Fort Benning, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Carson, Colo., Fort Rucker, Ala., Verdun, France, and Fort Leavenworth, Kan. In 1965, he was part of a planning group sent to Vietnam to form the 1st Logistical Command. He also served 14 months in Korea with the Korean Military Advisory Group. In 1973, he was assigned to NATO headquarters in Mannheim, Germany. In 1976, he was sent to McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla., with CENTAG, and was promoted to colonel in 1978. He retired in 1980.
