Francis Morrissey and Darby Weidl’s wrestling careers include attaining victories in the high levels of collegiate wrestling that include all-conference and All-American honors as well as state championship glory.
That experience and wisdom was imparted to current and potential future Greyhound wrestlers as the Greyhounds hosted a two-day technique camp last week at Turner Woods Elementary School.
“Between Darby and Francis, there’s multiple state titles, college All-Americans. Darby was at the US Olympic training center recently,” Jones County head wrestling coach Adam Gillhouse said. “They’ve been successful under some really good coaches.”
There was a two-pronged approach to last week’s camp. With one session of each day set aside for ages kindergarten through 12th grade, the afternoon session was solely for seventh grade and above. Through that, one half served as more of a basics of wrestling camp for those new to the sport of seeking to learn more with the afternoon geared more to detailed techniques and strategy.
Gillhouse said that being able to focus on a wide range of age groups over the two days was a plus.
“Having two really good clinicians come in, they did a lot of high-level technique with our older guys,” Gillhouse said. “We also were able to expose it to some of the new ones who have not done much wrestling before, they got to experience the sport.”
