–George Sheffield “I am the resurrection and the life” (Jn 11:25) Jesus arrived four days after Lazarus died and met with Martha, the sister of Lazarus. Jesus told her that Lazarus would rise again (v23).
Martha knew her Bible.
She knew that her brother would rise at the last day (v24). But this wasn’t what Jesus was speaking about. He was saying that Lazarus would rise right now.
Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life “.
He wasn’t claiming to just have the power of resurrection and life or that He had some mystic secrets about resurrection and life. No. He was stating emphatically that He IS the resurrection and life, that He is the source of those two things.
In Jn 10:18, Jesus taught He had the power to lay down His life and to take it up again because the command do so He had received from the Father. The Father gave the Son power to be the Resurrection and the Life. Death will not have the last word for Christians.
Jesus has the last word and that word is Resurrection and Life. Without Jesus there ain’t no resurrection and life.
