Burning the midnight oil: Lady Hounds get 2025 underway with midnight madness

With the night illuminated by LED lights overhead, the Lady Greyhounds officially began their 2025 campaign as early as possible at 12:01 am on Monday morning.

July 28 was the first allowed day by the GHSA for sports including softball to practice, and the Lady Hounds did the same as they usually do in holding their annual midnight madness workout.

The Lady Greyhounds, who lose just four seniors from a season ago, held a workout of about one hour early Monday, a session that also included introducing the theme for the season, “Be Somebody.”

“It’s great getting started. It feels like it sets the tone for the year,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “It’s something that we all look forward to each year.”

The early start is key for Jones County, which opens the season in an Aug. 5 home doubleheader against McDonough. The Lady Hounds’ regular season schedule will once again be loaded with region foes by way of 18 contests, making playing well early key in making a push toward the postseason within what’s expected to be a crowded race.

“We want to get started as soon as we can,” Burt said. “Next Tuesday, we start playing region games. With us having a doubleheader, this kind of sets the idea that it’s time to get going.”
