The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department July 29 — Aug. 6, 2025.
July 29
Possible scam
Lt. Gleaton was called to a local bank in reference to a possible scam involving a bank customer. Gleaton was provided documentation showing that the bank had spoken to the specific customer about suspicious transactions she had conducted from her checking account. The customer had withdrawn several thousand dollars from her account and advised the bank personnel that she was sending the funds to her boyfriend to help him obtain a “K-1 visa.” The customer also advised that her boyfriend was investing her funds in cryptocurrency. Bank personnel explained to the customer that she was most likely the victim of a scam. The customer did not heed the bank’s advice and insisted on sending the funds.
The bank made a report to Adult Protective Services and reported the monetary loss was in excess of $30,000.00.
Aug. 3
Wanted person
Deputy Dominguez was on patrol in the area of Hwy. 49 near a local food store, when he observed a male subject getting out of a vehicle that he knew had active warrants out on him. The deputy observed the male subject getting a drink from the vending machine. Dominguez confirmed the subject’s identity. The deputy watched the male get into his vehicle and pull out of the parking lot. At that time, Dominguez conducted a traffic stop and executed the active warrant. The male subject was placed in custody and transported to the Jones County Jail.
Possession of marijuana
Officer Holloway was sitting stationary at The Crossing monitoring traffic when he observed a vehicle fail to stop at the red light at The Crossing intersection and West Clinton St.
Holloway activated his blue lights and stopped the vehicle on Childs St. at East Clinton St. When Holloway approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, he smelled the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. At that time, the officer had the male driver exit the vehicle. The male driver provided the officer with his GA driver’s license. Holloway asked the male how much marijuana was in the car and the male stated that he had just bought about $50.00 worth from a friend. The male advised the officer that the marijuana was in a black bag behind the passenger seat in the rear floorboard. Due to odor and admittance of just purchasing the marijuana, Holloway performed a probable cause search of the vehicle. Holloway located the bag containing the marijuana and took photographs. The male driver was placed in custody, handcuffed and transported to the Jones County LEC. Holloway issued the male citations for possession of marijuana less than one ounce and failure to stop for traffic control device.
Aug. 6
Slower traffic must keep right
Corp. Sullivan was patrolling the area of the Gray Bypass when he came up behind a vehicle that was driving extremely slow in the left lane. Sullivan noticed that a tractor trailer passed the vehicle and it still refused to get in the right-hand lane. Sullivan then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for slower traffic must keep right. Sullivan made contact with the female driver and noticed that the female did not speak English.
The female driver identified herself by writing her name down for the officer. The female driver also did not have a driver’s license.
Sullivan then spoke to a female on the phone and the female was translating for him. Sullivan advised the translator that the female was being arrested for driving without a license. Corp.
Sullivan then transported the female driver to the Jones County Jail to receive her citations and the vehicle was released to a licensed driver that the female translator had contacted.
