People involved in the establishment of the new country of America are known as patriots of the American Revolution. As we prepare for the celebration of the 250th anniversary, the Oliver Morton Chapter of DAR and the Jones County News salute these patriots who located to our area or whose descendants have located in the area. This month we salute John Stiles who has a number of descendants living in middle Georgia, including seven members of the local DAR chapter.
John S tiles
John Stiles, a Revolutionary War soldier, was born in Chesterfield County, Virginia about 1755. He resided there during the war and assisted in establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of a Sergeant in the Infantry during the Revolution. He was paid 54 pounds for his services in the Virginia Line.
John was married to Agnes Franklin in Chesterfield County, Virginia. She was also born about 1755 in Virginia. They had ten children. John moved with his family and settled in Oglethorpe County, Georgia. One of the boys, Joseph Gills Stiles, bought land grant property in Jones County and moved here. John sold his land in Oglethorpe County and moved to Twiggs County to be near his son, Joseph. Agnes died before 1814 in Georgia and John remarried in 1816. His second wife, Clarissa (Clary Roberts Clance), a widow, survived him when he died in 1825 in Twiggs County, Georgia.
