Real Life

–George Sheffield For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord (Luke 2:11) You’ve heard it said that Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season. Santa’s not the reason. Christmas trees and decorations are not the reason. Church cantatas, gifts, snow, Frosty, parties--none of these things are the reason for the season. It’s Jesus we are told.

Well, yeah, Jesus is the reason, that is correct.

But even more so WE are the reason for the Christmas season. Us vile, Godless, sinners. We are the reason Jesus was born in Bethlehem. If not for our need of a Savior, Christ the Lord would not have had any need to be born at all.

Jesus came to save us from sin and its judgment. He came to die on a cross to pay sin’s penalty, to shed His blood to wash away our vile sins, to redeem us unto the Father, to write our names into His book of life. We couldn’t and we still can’t save ourselves. A Savior was born unto us to do that saving, and that Savior is Jesus the Lord.

Yes, Jesus is the reason for the Christmas season, but we are the reason why Jesus was born.
