As we approach the anniversary of our nation’s independence, we remember those who made that independence possible. Reuben Roberts, Sr. was one such patriot.
Reuben served as a private in the South Carolina State Troops and later as a guide for General Daniel Morgan during the American Revolution. After the war Reuben would move to Jones County, where he would become one of the county’s earliest settlers. It is from his namesake that the Roberts District of Jones County got its name.
When the Georgia Railroad was built through the county in 1883, a rail stop in Roberts District was named Roberts and eventually became known as Roberts Station, generating a center of commerce around a small depot.
Jones County History & Heritage, Inc. would like to invite you to the dedication of a historic marker dedicated to Roberts Station. This dedication will take place at the intersection of Lite-N-Tie Road and Watson Drive on Saturday, July 11, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.

Dear Editor,
Happy Birthday America! It’s time to celebrate! But before doing so, take a few moments to consider your humble beginnings, and the tremendous sacrifices your people made so that you could become the Land of the Free because of the brave. Think of the character of these people! It has merely been two and a half centuries since the ink dried, and you officially became The United States of America. That sounds like a long time, but it really isn’t.
Looking back over time and considering the progress made over the years, it is truly amazing. “You’ve come a long way, baby!” What would those who paid the ultimate price for you to become this independent nation think if they could see you now? I’m sure there would be a wide variety of emotions ranging from joy, pride and elation to betrayal, disgust and unbelief. America has certainly been a charitable nation and a model for many other nations.
The stated purpose at our founding was that America would bless God and take the gospel to all the world.
That is why God blessed the efforts to establish this land.
America has done well in the area of world evangelism, but to look at today’s society in general it would seem we have failed our own nation. There is so much crime and perversion throughout our nation. There is even what seems to be pure hated toward America and the church from a growing group of people. This is truly sad and so very wrong. The thing that drove our early ancestors to fight for independence was their understanding of what a godly could and should be. Their hearts were on fire for the Lord. America’s victory was settled in their hearts and minds before the first shot was ever fired. So, they made the necessary sacrifices, and many lives were lost or changed forever. They did it because to them, freedom was worth it.
They didn’t do it only for themselves and their families, but they did it for the many generations to come. That includes YOU and me. Would the Americans of today be willing to do so if the battle came to us? America has changed in many ways. The future at times looks hopeless, but we serve the God of hope. The God who still loves America is waiting with open arms for America to return to Him.

God’s people The Church, must pray more fervently, according to the prerequisites of 2 Chronicles 7:14, demonstrate patriotism, get involved, use our voices and vote! It’s time for the church to leave the building and bring Jesus to the community. This includes not only pastors and ministry leaders, but all Christians. This must happen in the grocery store, the workplace, government, schools, and on the ball field. It’s all about sharing Jesus and what He is doing in our lives. Celebrating America is celebrating God and His many blessings on this nation we call Home Sweet Home. May the Lord anoint our tongues with boldness, and our hearts and minds with love, desire and an urgency to share the good news of the gospel! Before the festivities begin on Independence Day July 4th, may we turn our hearts toward God, sending up praises to Him for His many blessings on America. May we greet this magnificent day in prayer for our family, neighbors, churches, and nation. Prayer is powerful and changes things. Gather your friends and family to unite in prayer for a fresh spiritual awakening across America. Remember to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, for those who are persecuted for their faith, and those who have yet to meet Jesus. Don’t forget to declare that America Shall Be Saved!
