As I reflect back on our Veteran’s Day Celebration held in Gray, we are so thankful for our men and women who serve and have served in the past. They are our heroes and those who have worked so effectively and faithful for our Memorial site on the Courthouse grounds. Much to our sorrow for those whose names on the pavers are there, but never knew this would be there, and those whom we have lost over the past few years were thankful.
In the last month we lost a 99-year-old World War II Veteran who was serving in the Merchant Marines as a young man when docked in a danger area. The testimony given by his grandson Logan Thornton was a message told by his Grandad of the fright seeing one of their ships go down by the enemy. It was a life changing time and Logan picked up his guitar and played and sang The Anchor Holds.
We will miss Mr. George Thornton this Saturday and remember him in a wheelchair with his son Neil and Brother Ed on each side, both Veterans, at last year’s event. If there are any World War II Veterans in Jones County, please call the Chamber and give their name, service and a photo if you have one. God bless you all our heroes.
