Destiny in Lady Hounds’ hands as second half of region schedule begins

GIRLS HOOPS

The Lady Greyhounds have enjoyed the luxury of all but one of their region games being at home so far this season. And for the most part, Jones County has taken full advantage of the opportunity.

With the region slate nearing its halfway mark, the Lady Hounds are tied for first place with Woodland thanks to a 6-1 region record, one game in front of Ola and Stockbridge.

After non-region games this week at Josey and at home against Putnam County, the Lady Hounds end the first half of the region schedule next Tuesday and Friday against ELCA and Union Grove.

“We know that if we do what we are supposed to do, we’ll be fine,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “We know if we do what we’re supposed to do as a team, we can do great things as long as we go out there and play our brand of Jones County basketball.”

After next week’s return to region play comes a cluster of games that figure to loom large into who claims the regular-season region title. JCHS plays Jan. 20 at Ola and hosts Stockbridge Jan. 23, one of few home region games the rest of the season. Jones County also plays Jan. 24 at Woodland in a matchup of the two current region leaders. JCHS won the previous meet between the teams 62-46 in December.

But unlike last month, that span will come away from Gray, much like the first half of last year in the region in which Jones County was unbeaten the whole region schedule. Once the second half of the region schedule starts Jan. 10, all but one of Jones County’s matchups will be on road.

“If we get through this road trip, we have a good chance to make a run,” Gray said.
