Distance runners win big in Monticello

A reminder was laid out on Saturday in Monticello that Jones County’s distance runners are still among middle Georgia’s best.

Competing at the Monticello Distance Meet, Jones County took first in five different high school events while also dominating the front end of multiple finishing orders.

Tanner Watts was at the forefront of the 800-meter run for Jones County, winning first on a time of 2:32.70, in front of Mary Barnwell in second (2:36.15) and Jordan Norman-Brown (2:45.76) in fourth. Macie White, Emma Hammond, and Saylor Bell finished sixth, ninth, and 10th. The Lady Hounds also won the distance medley relay on a time of 14:20.40.

On the boys’ side, Jones County took first in four varsity events. One of those was the distance medley on a time of 12:09.41 with Dalton Russell’s time of 11:22.86 taking the top spot in the 3,200 meters. In the 1,600 meters, times of 4:47.31 and 5:05.91 by Gavin Robinson and Rylan Fuller earned finishes of first and third. Jones County swept the top five spots in the 800 meters, led by Clay Lacy in first on a time of 2:02.51 and Luke Thornton in second on a time of 2:04.77. They were followed, in order, by Tyler Marshall, Ian Boresahole, and Dalton Russell with times of 2:05.07, 2:09.94, and 2:13.62.

In middle school events, Jones County won first in the girls distance medley relay and boys 4x800 relay in addition to placing second in the boys distance medley. Other top boys middle school finishers were Cole Brown, claiming first in the 3,200 meters, Rhett Renner and Knox Watson coming in third and fifth in the 1,600 meters with finishes of fifth and sixth by Easton Belshan and Kennlee Hill in the 800 meters.
