The destination for their futures may be different, but the step in their future athletic careers moved forward for a trio of Jones County student-athletes last Wednesday.
Football standouts Devin Edmonds and Zach Hurt as well as softball’s Tranasia Parker celebrated their college destinations during a signing day ceremony in the JCHS Cafeteria filled with family, friends and teammates.
Edmonds inked with Shorter University, closing out a career as a two-year starter at quarterback in which he was 17-5 and threw for a school record 71 touchdowns. He also passed for 6,452 yards, second all-time in school history.
Zach Hurt, who played extensively on both sides of the ball this past season, signed on to play for Reinhardt University. The throng of classmates present on Wednesday included those who played alongside Edmonds and Hurt.
“Your contributions are just as significant to this moment as theirs,” JCHS tight ends coach David Denson said while speaking on behalf of the Greyhounds football program. “These signings are the result of our program, which is bult on the strength of this entire team, not just individuals.”
For softball’s Tranasia Parker, she’ll be trading one shade of gold for another in signing with Albany State. Her storied Lady Greyhound career includes setting the school record for homers with 28 in addition to all-region and all-state honors.
“She’s everything you can ask for,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said of Parker. “She’s someone who works hard as both a teammate and as a player.”
