After a summer of voluntary workouts and helmets, the next level of the lead-up to the start of football season became official Monday at Jones County High School with the Greyhounds strapping on full pads, starting the week with a two-a-day practice, first early in the morning prior to the early evening.
As Monday ended, one thing evident was something that’s been a key measuring point during the offseason under new head coach Justin Montgomery - growth.
“I think we went from point A to point B. We had a lot of growth, a lot more improvement than what we saw in the springtime,” Montgomery said. “We’re starting to hit our stride, and a lot of the guys are starting to, it feels like football again for them.”
Jones County, which will hold an intrasquad scrimmage Friday, hosts Mary Persons Aug. 8 for a preseason scrimmage. And as that time nears, focus on that task also accelerates with the arrival of a semblant facet of football’s preseason with the donning of full pads.
“And the guys have been itching for it,” Montgomery said. “You are starting to see them more locked in as we go.”
