Mercer wrapped up its first spring practice under new head coach Joel Taylor on April 4 at Five Star Stadium with the defensive side of the ball winning 66-43 as a specialized scoring system was used.
Former Greyhounds standout Javious Bond, who transferred to Mercer from Austin Peay in the offseason, played a prominent role on offense for the Bears, receiving passes and picking up carries from the running back position. He was also a designated returner in punt and kickoff situations.
The Bears open the season Sept. 5 at home against Presbyterian with another early-season non-conference game being Sept. 19 at Georgia Tech.
“Any time you come out and practice, it’s important.
Just because it’s a spring game does not mean that it’s more important than another (practice),” Taylor said.
“We didn’t go to the ground, so it may not be as aggressive as we wanted.
“I thought we had a good spring, overall. We’re excited about where we’re headed, but we have a long way to go.”
