Greyhounds begin summer with plenty of youthful enthusiasm

Theoretically speaking, the summer gambit of basketball workouts has two parts. While June is more of a team focus, July is more zeroed in on improvement as an individual.

The previous of those got off to a rolling start on Friday for the Greyhounds as they began their first month of summer workouts at Clifton Ridge Middle School with new head coach Dylan Dupree at the helm.

Jones County held its first workout of its summer regimen on Friday afternoon, a session in which there was plenty of youth on hand. Dupree was quick to point out that there was a strong number of rising freshmen and sophomores as well as a few middle schoolers getting work in.

“We had a great group of younger players and had lot of middle schoolers,” Dupree said. “It’s good to see so many guys here getting work in and getting better.”

Those workouts, by the way, are in the afternoon, allowing those also playing football to take part in football work in the morning and basketball later in the day.

“I’m a big football fan. I’ve played it and coached it. I definitely want to encourage that,” Dupree said. “That’s the message we want to send. I’m a fan of our football program, so I don’t want to clash with their schedule. We want to set that precedent as a program.”

For the Greyhounds, the month of June will be a mix for both team workouts and a handful of planned team camp settings.

It’s all part of a growth process as Dupree takes over as head coach.

“The biggest thing starting out is just the routine. I want us to play with great effort, great attitude and to learn how to be good teammates,” Dupree said. “This month, we want to play extremely hard and be great teammates.”
