WRESTLING
Competing for team scores is out the window for the Greyhound wrestlers. Now, it’s all about one-on-one competition. The quest to be among the best in an individual weight class kicks up this weekend with the region traditional tournament, and Jones County will serve as the host.
The top finishers from this weekend advance to sectionals, with top finishers there earning a right to take the mat in the state traditional tournament, held Feb. 16-18 at the Macon Centreplex.
The Greyhounds are coming off a close loss last week to Perry, a team that’s typically a factor in the state tournament. That’s where JCHS aspires to be starting this weekend, with multiple wrestlers from a team that was consistently among the state’s top 10 in the GHSA Class AAAAA classification seeking to show that success can come in various types of wrestling formats.
James Rackley and Chi Anderson stand to be among the frontrunners to make another run at a state tourney berth. Rackley qualified for state last year with Anderson doing so two years ago and was on track to do the same last year prior to an injury ending his season early. Given that wrestlers such as Carson Lumley, Aiden Lipford, Will Agudelo and Hunter McCleskey were near the top of the win\\loss sheet during duals competition, they are also likely to be in line to make a state tourney push, as well.
Anderson and Rackley will also be seeking to end their senior seasons with a bang. Both were recognized alongside the Greyhounds wrestling managers during last week’s senior night festivities.
