For the most part, the time for fine-tuning and tweaking is almost complete for the Greyhounds on the wrestling mat.
Since falling short of advancing to last year’s GHSA state wrestling duals, redemption has been on Jones County’s mind. The time to cash in those payoff chips is almost here.
For JCHS, the job is simple. Finish in the top two of next weekend’s region duals at Locust Grove, and a spot in the state duals is theirs.
“At this point, all of our guys know what it takes to win a state championship. They know enough technique. Now it’s time to hone in and be sharp,” Greyhounds head coach Adam Gillhouse said.
From the standpoint of wrestling in the state of Georgia, there are three seasons. The time before duals, duals tournaments, and then traditional individual season. With the first of those nearly complete, the time to officially contend for a state duals title has nearly arrived for Jones County.
Sure, showings at duals tournaments and other individuals carry their own accolades for the Greyhounds. But the bigger impact will show next weekend with advancement against the region at stake.
JCHS has one final prep for the region duals this weekend when it wrestles at a duals match hosted by Wesleyan in Atlanta.
“We can go up there and kind of play around and with our lineup stuff a little bit and kind of get ready for the duals,” Gillhouse said.
That setting will serve as a chance to try minor adjustments for the Greyhounds, just before the window of the season that Jones County has worked toward for more than two months.
“Right now, you really want to be hitting on some specific things. We have a list of stuff you want each guy to work on individually, and there’s obviously some stuff we want to work on as a team that we need to clean up,” Gillhouse said. “You want to hone in and find things that you feel like you can work on.”
