With traditional tournament season on the near horizon, the Greyhounds got one final chance to tune-up on Thursday as they coasted past Peach County 41-15 under the home spotlight.
Up next? The chase for individual glory, and the road begins at the JCHS gymnasium. Jones County will host the Region 2-AAAA tournament on Friday, where top finishers will advance to sectionals that will determine qualifiers for the Feb. 11-14 state traditional tournament.
The Greyhounds don’t just get to wrestle close to home Friday, but it will also be during the school day.
With a 10 a.m. start time, a bulk of the JCHS student body will get a chance to see the Greyhounds wrestle for region glory.
“It’ll be a neat environment, something we have never done before,” Greyhounds head coach Adam Gillhouse said. “Being able to wrestle during school, it’ll be fun. I’m excited for everyone to see it during school.”
Jones County heads to Friday’s region tournament after finding success, both in match wins and other techniques from Thursday’s win. Against the Trojans, wins by technical fall early on by Arrie Martin and Jacob Skinner as well as a pin by Barrett Rosenberger helped JCHS to an initial 23-12 lead.
That was followed up with wins by Dawson Walker and Nate McDaniel as well as by Nate Wilson.
“This was our last competition date before region individuals, so there were some guys that we sent out there that for some of them, the goal was to go win. And for some others, it was that there were things for them to work on,” Gillhouse said. “I think you saw that with how they got takedowns and scored points.”
