Greyhounds pleased with growth of young offensive line

FORSYTH - With Friday’s preseason scrimmage being shortened before reaching halftime, less time than expected was gained when it came to the Greyhounds getting time against an outside opponent in a game setting.

But even with that limited time, there’s one group that received a big gain by being on the field. That would be Jones County’s offensive line, a position group that’s in rebuilding mode.

“It’s good to see them against somebody else.

They have gone against our defense for so long,” Greyhounds head coach Mike Chastain said. “Having a few OTAs (in the summer), the o-line gets closer to real, but it goes full tilt in a game. It was good to see them out there with full pads.”

That group keyed the Greyhounds to 21 firsthalf points, giving quarterback Devin Edmonds ample time to throw and opening running lanes for the likes of Zacarri Thomas and David Little.

“It’s big. We have come so far since (the spring game) against Perry,” Greyhounds offensive line coach Daniel Brinson said. “We started three tenth graders, which is very hard to do. They did such a good job; they are getting better every day.”

Those three sophomores are Alex Hammond, Cam Sherman and Luke McCoy, filling out both tackle positions as well as center. Hammond and Sherman weigh in at 250 pounds with McCoy at 180.

“They’ve caught up with a big learning curve and done a great job,” Brinson said. “We work to get a lot of guys and reps. They’ve done a great job of buying in. “I could not be prouder of what they have turned into.”
