Greyhounds wrap up preseason with scrimmage

The Greyhounds Greyhounds, who opened the regular season on Monday with a 6-0 loss to Perry, wrapped up their preseason last Wednesday, taking on West Laurens.

And though Jones County fell short to the Raiders, the focus was not on the final score.

That was shown from the start, with the Greyhounds top three pitchers – Dawson Harris, Brody Gordon and Bo Mansfield – getting a rest from pitching in favor of allowing younger arms to pitch. In addition, most of the Greyhounds regular starters were swapped out after the first few innings.

“Just the youth of our team and guys we have that we’re trying to get to the pace of this level, that’s what this was about. Getting our young guys experience on the mound and at the plate against a very talented team that can swing it well and have them compete,” Greyhounds head coach Mike Paulk said. “We made some mistakes and they capitalized, but I was proud of the poise what we showed on the mound, even with these guys being so young. They didn’t get flustered. We competed every pitch. That’s what I was most proud of.”

The Greyhounds will have plenty of chances to see what their roster, both young and old, can do right away. Their season began Monday at Perry with West Laurens being the home opener scheduled for Thursday.

Then, on Friday, Perry visits Cecil Patterson Field while on Saturday, Appling County comes to Gray. JCHS was originally slated to play at Appling County Friday, but that game was postponed due to weather.
