Girls finish season first in region, boys second

The Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds have both made history.

Now, they are looking to make an even bigger imprint.

After splitting with Union Grove last week and sweeping McDonough, both teams earned what’s believed to be the best finish in the final regular season region standings in school history. The Greyhounds finished second in the region with the Lady Hounds finishing atop the region.

The prize from that success? Top seeds for the region tournament April 1-2 that will determine seedings for the state tournament. The Lady Hounds will enter that tourney as the top seed with the Hounds seeded second. The top two seeds at the end of the region tournament will host first-round matches in the state tournament which will complete by no later than April 24.

The Lady Hounds finished wrapped up their regular-season run with a 3-2 win against Union Grove and 5-0 sweep of McDonough.

Against Union Grove, Lyndsie Hanner and Mallory Herndon took singles wins by scores of 8-2 with Macie Milholen and Genna Maki claiming an 8-0 doubles win. Against McDonough, Hanner took an 8-0 win with Chloe Scarborough prevailing 8-2 and Herndon winning via forfeit.

The Greyhounds, who fell 4-1 to Union Grove with the lone win being from Evan Randall and Drew Holder 9-7, solidified their finish in the standings with a 3-2 win against McDonough. Kalyb Durden claimed a 3-2 singles win with doubles win by Wesley Maynard and Landon Lagroon 8-1 with Randall and Holder taking an 8-0 victory.

Both teams also finished out last week with 5-0 wins against GMC Prep in a home match. For the Greyhounds, Matthew O’Neal won 8-3, Sid Giles prevailed 8-5 with Durden winning 5-1. In boys’ doubles play, Maynard and Lagroon won 8-0 with Randall and Holder taking a win via forfeit.

In the girls match, Lyndsie Hanner won 9-8 on a 7-3 tiebreaker with Scarborough and Herndon also picking up singles wins. Doubles win for the Lady Hounds came from Emily Parks and Nahlia Richardson by a score of 8-6 with Milholen and Maki winning 8-4.
