BOYS HOOPS
In a region with multiple teams being ranked among the state’s top 10 in the AAAAA classification, this time of year is like a game of musical chairs. When the music stops, the goal is to be one of four teams with a spot to sit. Except in this case, one of those chairs holds a state tournament berth.
It’s a game that in the past two years has been unkind to the Greyhounds as they have come up a win short of the state tournament in a parity-filled region tournament.
Jones County began the week in a similar position following a fifth-place finish to the regular season. It came after the Greyhounds split a pair of games within the region last week. Jones County dispatched of Ola last Tuesday, 68-49, before coming up just short Friday at Dutchtown in a 51-46 loss.
That wrapped the Greyhounds regular season up with a record of 15-10 and 5-7 in the region, placing them fifth going into the region tournament where the boys bracket opened play on Tuesday at Warner Robins.
The winner of Tuesday’s game involving the Greyhounds advanced to Thursday’s tournament semifinal against top seed Eagles Landing.
Friday’s defeat highlighted just how snakebit JCHS has been against the region’s upper half this season. Of the Greyhounds seven region losses, all but one have been by single digits and with the exception of one defeat at the hands of Eagles Landing, the other six region losses have been by a combined 31 points, an illustration of how fierce of the region that the Greyhounds are in.
