BOYS SOCCER
The Greyhounds postseason hopes officially ended with Tuesday’s 5-1 loss to Dutchtown. But Jones County, even in defeat, fired a shot across the bow all the way to the finish, showing that despite its postseason prospects, it’s a team that will still play hard to the finish.
A Dorian Graham goal with 2:49 to play got the Greyhounds on the board late, avoiding a shutout and generated a building block for a young soccer club as it goes toward the offseason.
“That’s us; that’s our identity. I told them before the game, ‘empty the gas tank,’“ Greyhounds head coach Will Cowart said.
“To go down 4-0 at the half and then to play the second half 1-1, we did that. I’m proud of the kids for that.”
Jones County hung with the visiting Bulldogs early on, only to have defensive breakdowns at the 26th, 23rd and 19th minutes result in goals. That, along with a goal off a penalty kick, put Dutchtown ahead 4-0 at halftime.
“It definitely had its head-scratching moments. At halftime, we for lack of a better way, challenged them to do what they were coached and just do what they’re coached in the second half,” Cowart said. “In these games that we have left, we’ll fight to the end.”
The Greyhounds conclude the season at home Thursday against Houston County.
