With less than a month to go in the season and a handful of region matches to play, the Volley Hounds are still finding plenty to dig in and strive for.
Part of that drive came last Thursday in between competition of a tri-match against ELCA and Union Grove.
“Each of the girls set an individual goal for themselves. They wrote that on paper, and it’s a secret to them,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Kim Hanner said.
Thursday’s loss came in a pair of matches in which the Lady Greyhounds fell behind early and fell short, losing 3-0 in both to teams rated at or near the top of the region standings.
“They just have so many big hitters that can hit those spots. That’s something you can practice against, but you can only do so much,” Hanner said of Union Grove. “A lot of those girls play year-round, and they just have a finesse that we have not quite gotten to yet. But we’ll keep working.”
In the first set against Union Grove, JCHS trailed 6-1 in an eventual 25-9 loss. Jones County rallied in the second set, closing to being down 12-7 after being down 8-1. The Lady Hounds got as close as 17-14 by way of four points in a row with Grace Faircloth serving before the Wolverines put away the 25-16 win.
“They gave it a good shot. I’m proud of them,” Hanner said.
Jones County, which played Putnam County Tuesday, plays Sept. 26 at McDonough as well as against Eagles Landing.
