With a senior class of nine players, the Greyhounds have a wealth of experience from which to draw.
That experience netted an early-season win last week for Jones County in a 6-0 senior night win against Crawford County.
Will Utley picked up the soccer version of the hat trick, scoring three times with two goals by Jacob Watts and another by Yassine Errahimi.
Watts and Utley each scored once in the first half before the Greyhounds pulled away for the win in the second half.
“It’s real big,” Greyhounds head coach Nathan Robertson said. “Having the seniors win on senior night in the third game of the season, that shows much leadership they have as a group.”
Most senior classes are usually leaned on to lead a younger roster of players, but with more seniors to look to, Robertson says that it will be even more of the case this spring.
“Last year, going into my first year, I put a lot of trust in our seniors, and I told these guys same,” Robertson said. “They have to be building blocks of the team and take control, because everyone will be looking up to them.”
The Greyhounds, who have since lost to Jasper County and FPD, open region play Friday at Hampton with the region home opener being March 11 against Union Grove.
