TRACK & FIELD
Next up for Jones County track and field? Sectionals, one short step from next week’s GHSA Class AAAAA state meet in Columbus.
Track athletes from multiple types of running and field events will compete in Saturday’s sectionals at Union Grove in McDonough, being made up of top competitors from Regions 1 through 4.
The top performers at sectionals will then move on to the state meet, set for May 11-13 at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus.
Multiple Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds are in position to lock up a trip to Columbus following the region meet, an event that came with unexpected challenges. Due to expected weather, all of the events were run on one day instead of being spread out more, putting some runners that take part in multiple events in a tighter pinch time and stamina-wise.
In spite of that, top finishes came the way of Jones County, with a sweep of the top three of the girls 1,600- and 3,200meter events with Zion Ragins keeping his quick pace up, winning the boys 100-meter event and finishing second in the 200. His time of 10.72 won the 100 meters, and a 21.82 was second in the 200 meters. He had company in the 100-meter event with Tyler Stewart’s 10.82 bringing him in fourth.
As dominant as Ragins was individually, multiple Lady Hounds took over in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events.
In fact, Camryn Wommack’s time of 5:54.72 won the 1,600 meters in front of the 5:54.82 and 5:56.11 of Lilly Palmer and Addison Robinson. Wommack and Palmer flip flopped in the 3,200 meters, Palmer winning with a time of 12:47.80 in front of Wommack’s 12:48.20 in the second and Robinson’s 13:16.43 in third.
Robinson qualified with the sectionals in the 800 meters, too, running a 2:34.39 on a day that also saw Mya Anderson’s long jump of 16-4.5 bring her in fourth as the 4x800 relay’s time of 10:31.01 won first.
Three different boys relay teams finished in the top four of the region with times of 42.44 and 1:32.00 in the 4x100 and 4x200 to go with the 4x800’s fourthplace time of 8:39.39.
Austin Sullivan ran a 10:22.01 to finish third in the 3,200 meters with a pair of second-place finishes in field events rounding out things for the Greyhounds.
Jaivon Solomon took second in the triple jump at 42.11 with Austin Hanks doing so with a throw of 147-8 in the discus.
