The Greyhounds soccer season came to an end Thursday night, and it was arguably in a manner that was a nutshell of Jones County’s season.
JCHS dug its heels in against Ola. After falling behind in the first half, the Greyhounds fought to stay within distance of the lead. That persistence paid off in the second half when Jones County’s offensive aggression resulted in Brendan Waters drawing a penalty kick. He took advantage, blasting the fall into the back of the Ola net with just over 14 minutes to go.
JCHS had a handful of chances to pull ahead going toward the end of regulation, none of which quite materialized then or in the two overtime periods. That sent things to a shootout, when Ola prevailed to win.
“One thing throughout the season that we’ve seen is how much they fight,” Greyhounds head coach Nathan Robertson said. “They’ve always fought hard to stay in the game, even if they are down, they still fight.”
With the loss, a chapter closes for the Greyhound seniors, many of which lingered after the game on the field to take sentimental photos to mark their final time on the pitch.
“The seniors, they had a huge part in this team,” Robertson said. “In the beginning of the season, we had a meeting with them that we needed to them to step up and lead. They did a good job of that and ran with it. I’m very proud of them for that.”
