JCHS rolling out welcome mat for Gauntlet In Gray tournament

The gauntlet of a wrestling season usually sets up tournaments away from home, offering up chances for teams to go against a mixture of competition to prepare for region and state tournaments.

Another gauntlet awaits on Saturday, and for the Greyhounds, it comes at home with the Gauntlet in Gray being hosted on Saturday at the JCHS Gymnasium starting at or before 10 a.m.

“It’ll be exciting to be able to wrestle at home and showcase what we’ve been doing in front of friends and family,” Greyhounds head coach Adam Gillhouse said.

Saturday’s tourney will be as close to a region tournament preview as teams can ask for, with region tournaments coming the next weekend for teams like Jones County and other squads from middle Georgia expected to be in the lineup.

“That’s the big thing. The majority of coaches that will have teams here, they are good friends of mine. This is a tune-up for the region duals and a chance to put guys in good situations and try to have our best lineup going into region.”

With Saturday being more or less a region tournament tune-up, a day full of teams wrestling to set the stage for one of the key weekends of the season should be seen on the mat. That, Gillhouse says, should add more intensity.

“For us, our goal is to peak at the right time,” Gillhouse said. “We know that we will get everyone else’s best, so we have to be ready to perform.”
