Lady Hounds eager for non-region challenges

GREYHOUND SOFTBALL

Most of the way from now until the end of the softball season, the Lady Greyhounds schedule has one constant – around two region games per week.

Within a region of nine other teams, being able to measure themselves against other teams is key for the Lady Greyhounds since there are fewer games outside of the region. That’s why a cluster of early-season games against teams used to the postseason are important.

That need is magnified more after last Thursday’s scrimmage was unable to be played due to weather.

“When you fight mother nature, mother nature always wins,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “We’ve been able to get a few practices in, but we’re at the point now where we’re ready to play somebody other than ourselves.”

Needless to say, JCHS began this week chomping at the bit to match up against someone wearing the opposite uniform. In between scheduled road games on Tuesday and Thursday at McDonough and Hampton, the home opener against Perry was set for Wednesday.

Next Thursday’s home game against Eagles Landing will be followed by a pair of Saturday home matchups with Eastside and Coffee in town. Eastside made the state Elite 8 last year with Coffee coming up one round shy of doing the same.

“We try to schedule some really good non-region opponents early-on to kind give us a feel for where we are and what we need to work on and help us get to where we need to be,” Burt said.
