The Lady Greyhounds will wrap up the first half of the region schedule late this week and into next when they host Stockbridge and travel to Ola. In doing so, they are confronting a margin for error that’s growing slimmer due to multiple teams fighting to be within the region’s top four teams.
Last week raised that urgency as JCHS dropped a pair of road games to teams within the top half of the region, 8-2 on Tuesday at Union Grove and 11-3 on Thursday at Eagles Landing Christian Academy.
“It was a tough week. But on Friday, the kids came out to practice ready to turn the page and put it behind us and make the corrections that we need to make,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Tripp Burt said. “We had a good practice and good intensity. We feel like that will carry us in the right direction.”
Both of last week’s losses had a common trend – a rough start in the early innings before Jones County was able to steady things. Against Union Grove, the hard-hitting Wolverines pushed three runs across the plate in the first inning and two more in the second.
“We swung the bats well,” Burt said of the Union Grove loss. “We just lined out here, there and everywhere.”
Against ELCA, the opposition plated a combined nine runs in the first two innings.
“We just have to come out of the gate ready to go. It’ll be a lot different next time if we do that,” Burt said.
Myah Briscoe was the offensive leader against ELCA with three hits to go with Genna Maki’s RBI with the offensive standouts against Union Grove being Marissa Moore and Sydney Hawkins registering hits.
At 4-3 overall and 3-2 in the region, the Lady Hounds began the week sixth in the standings. “It definitely raises the importance for the second half,” Burt said. “We’re in a region with five good teams. You have to be ready to go when we see them again.”
