Lady Hounds edge Perry ahead of home stretch within region

Last Wednesday brought two regular postseason mainstays to the softball diamond in Jones County and Perry. After JCHS won a one-run game earlier in the season, the Lady Hounds did the same on the road, scoring three extra-inning runs and holding off a two-run rally by the Panthers to win 10-9.

Last week’s block of games, which ended on Saturday in losses to West Laurens and North Oconee in games played at GCSU, set the table for a head-first dive back into region play. A six-game span of region games began Tuesday and Wednesday at home against ELCA and Union Grove. The Lady Hounds’ next home region game is Oct. 1 against Stockbridge.

Jones County needs to beat every team below it in the region standings and have Locust Grove lose its games to the top three above in in the region – Ola, Union Grove and ELCA – for the Lady Hounds (10-8, 8-4) to win the tiebreaker for the region’s fourth postseason spot.

Manufacturing runs was no issue on Wednesday for the Lady Greyhounds, who churned out 13 hits, three from Allie Miller, who had two doubles.

The Lady Hounds had seven doubles against the Panthers with the others coming from Myah Briscoe, Tranasia Parker, Ansley Pegg, Marissa Moore and Kaleigh Scarborough. That, as well as two hits each from Jenkins, Pegg and Ensley Barnes, helped Jones County move to a 5-2 win through five innings and 7-3 through six.

That, however, is when Perry eventually got its offense going against Pegg, who pitched six and third of an inning, tying the score at 7-7 to send the game to extra innings where Cate Downey got the win, giving up two runs on three hits the rest of the way.
