HOOP HOUNDS
There are two ways that teams can approach a non-region schedule – either stockpile wins or get a strong measure of strengths and weaknesses before region play.
Jones County is embracing the latter. The Lady Greyhounds capped off the girls side of Saturday’s Hooping In Middle Georgia Classic held at JCHS against Veterans, ranked sixth in AAAAAA. Despite having a size disadvantage, the Lady Hounds hung right with the Warhawks before Veterans pulled away late for a 44-33 win.
“They’re much bigger than us and out toughed us. We’re small and scrappy and have to play a lot harder. We were in it the whole time; we just have to get scrappy,” Lady Greyhounds head coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney-Harris said. “Veterans is very good and has players that are ranked high in the state. We hunt right there with them. We’ll keep working and get better.”
The chance to get better will come soon for the Lady Greyhounds. Jones County’s early-season schedule rolls on Saturday in the HypeSouth Invitational in Warner Robins in a 12:30 p.m. matchup against North Atlanta prior to going against Greene County and Walnut Grove in next week’s Wade Classic in Athens leading into the region opener on Nov. 28 against Union Grove.
“It’s still a bit early to tell where and who we are. We’ll make changes and figure out where we need to be and work to get better,” Gwaltney-Harris said.
