Lady Hounds not shying away from challenges

The offseason showcases and team tournaments are in the rear-view mirror for the Lady Greyhounds.

Now, as they come off an appearance in the round of 16 a season ago, Jones County’s focus turns to the season ahead, one that will be stocked with challenges before region play starts Dec. 2.

“Summer league and preseason is one thing, but actually being back knowing you are about to start the season is a whole other thing,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “It’s good to be back. Knowing what is on the horizon, it’s exciting.”

Yes, Jones County will be a prime target across the region after last year’s wire-to-wire title. But they also expect to be battle tested in a non-region schedule, too, with teams in that group including ranked or postseason regulars such as Josey, Warner Robins, Putnam County and Lamar County.

Jones County lost a total of two games last year, and one of those defeats came to Warner Robins. Josey out of Augusta was a final four team last year with Putnam being a secondround team in its classification, its loss being to one of the Lady Hounds’ non-region foes this season, Lamar County.

“Our goal was to see high-ranked competition,” Gray said. “With our non-region schedule, we’re doing the same. We want to see tough competition.”
