The Lady Greyhounds are now more than halfway there through the region title race. And their hopes to repeat as region champions are a lot more than living on a prayer.
After a 93-21 road flummoxing of McDonough on Saturday, Jones County is 12-4 overall and 9-1 in the region. That ties them for first place with Woodland, who Jones County currently has a head-tohead tiebreaker for first place in the region standings, which will decide seeding for next month’s region tournament.
“I feel good about where we are,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Takeo Gray said. “I think we had an early wakeup call this year with Stockbridge, so we are taking every game as seriously as we can.”
Saturday’s win, one in which JCHS scored 38 second-quarter points, followed last week’s home wins of 58-33 against ELCA and 58-35 over Union Grove. Jones County, which also hosts Lamar County in a non-region game on Saturday, also hosts Stockbridge next Friday. The Tigers are the only region team to beat the Lady Hounds this season.
All three of last week’s wins saw JCHS seize control early, leading 21-8 after a quarter against ELCA and 17-7 through one against Union Grove prior to a 28-15 halftime advantage.
The Lady Greyhounds’ early lead came as they adjusted to the Wolverines being aggressive on defense.
“They tried it last year when we played them up there,” Gray said. “It’s something we have to adjust to and be ready for.”
Jones County adapted as Kamiyah Adams scored 11 of her 25 points in the first quarter. Desirae Dumas added 15 points for the Lady Greyhounds, who kept Union Grove’s defense spread out with a combined four threepointers from Dumas, Autumn Coleman, and Aubrey Norris.
