If the Lady Greyhounds previous performance against the region can be called a statement, this past Thursday was one highlighted in bold.
To Jones County girls basketball, Union Grove has been a bit of a nemesis in recent years. In the previous eight regular season games between the two teams, the Lady Hounds had lost all but one, and that win came back in the 2020-21 season.
All that changed Thursday at Union Grove as Mya Anderson’s 15 points and six rebounds led Jones County to a 48-43 win over the Wolverines, giving Jones County a clean 9-0 sweep through the first half of the region schedule. The second half, comprised completely of home games within the region, began Tuesday against Eagles Landing and continues Friday against Locust Grove.
With a 14-1 and 9-0 record, JCHS, ranked eighth in GHSA Class AAAA, will have home-court advantage Jan. 24 against second-place and ninth-ranked Stockbridge, where a win could give the Lady Hounds a two-game lead for first place in the region. The second game against Union Grove is Feb. 4.
As sterling as Anderson’s play was on Thursday, it was hardly the only standout effort. Autumn Coleman struck big from long range, getting all nine of her points on a trio of three pointers with Kamiyah Adams scoring 10 points to go with eight rebounds and three steals. Liberty Pennamon’s six points as complimented by four assists and three steals with Aubrey Norris chipping in five rebounds, five assists and two steals.
Two days before taking down Union Grove, the Lady Hounds waltzed past ELCA 62-35 led by Adams’ 23 points, nine rebounds and two blocks. Pennamon reached double figures with 10 points and two steals with Destinee Dumas contributing nine points and two steals as she also drained a pair of three pointers. Coleman added seven points and three steals.
