In terms of bad hands from 'old lady luck,' the Lady Greyhounds have had more of their fill in the past week.
Coming off Friday's shootout loss to Warner Robins, the postseason hopes of the Lady Greyhounds were very much alive. A win on Monday against Locust Grove would clinch fourth place in the region and a return to the state tournament for Jones County.
But a 1-0 first-half lead for the Wildcats ended up being just enough as that margin would stand to drop the Lady Hounds' record to 5-7 overall and 1-4 in the region.
The Lady Greyhounds may have come up short in the second half, but none of that was from a lack of trying. Multiple times, forcing the ball downfield resulted in corner kicks, three within a minute at around 16:00 to play and another in the final five minutes. Each time, however, Locust Grove either came up with a save or JCHS didn't get the bounce it needed.
Jones County sought other ways to find the equalizer, finding a degree of success with Reagan Sorrell trying to line up a scoring chance via a cross pass. Both Daisy Blanton and Kalyn Knight surged on two separate scoring chances but were not quite able to put the ball in the net. Blanton also had a chance to score along the left side with just over seven minute to go before the Wildcats goalkeeper diffused the scoring chance as Locust Grove held on for the slim victory.
JCHS, which lost 3-0 last Tuesday to Dutchtown, battled Warner Robins to a 2-2 tie in the first half on Friday. After each team notched a goal in overtime, the Demonettes won 3-1 in a shootout.
The Lady Hounds wrap up the season Thursday at home against Ola.
