Middle school girls run to conference title

CROSS COUNTRY

A league title belongs to Jones County’s middle school runners after last week’s Georgia Middle School Athletic League championship saw three Jones County runners finish in the top nine to propel the way to finish first place overall in a meet held at Greyhound Park.

In addition to Mary Barnwell setting a season-best time, Tanner Watts was sixth and Becca Durrett came in ninth. The strength hardly ended there for Jones County as Catelen Myers was 14th and Phoebe Palmer was 20th.

The boys finished fourth overall, led by Dalton Russell in ninth, Jace Grogan in 11th and Owen Wommack in 18th.

Jones County dominated the JV race, winning first overall in both events and having the top overall finishes with Baleigh Gowan on the girls side and Luke Oliveros in the boys event, in which multiple season bests were set. Gowan’s run was among those season bests.

Sydney Vaughan, Katie Doster and Emma Hammond were among the girls runners setting season bests with each finishing sixth, seventh and tenth. For the boys, other top finishes were Aiden Davis in fourth and Jordan Wooten, Cruz Hudgins, Carter Owens, Daniel Sanchez and Caleb Waters. Of those runners, all with the exception of Sanchez were among those setting season bests.
