Greyhounds wrap up preseason camp, turn focus to scrimmage against Mary Persons
Aside from a late-June session, the Greyhounds will see something different on Friday night, and it’s a site that will be very welcome.
Through the spring and summer, Jones County has focused on making itself better. That process continues on Friday with one difference - it’ll also be a measuring stick against someone else.
“I’m excited, I’m ready to see us kick off against someone else,” Greyhounds head coach Justin Montgomery said.
The Greyhounds host Mary Persons at 7:30 p.m. on Friday in a preseason scrimmage, a dress rehearsal before next Friday’s season opener at Veterans. The lead-up to Friday comes after the camp portion of the preseason in which steps forward existed not just among coaches, but players as well.
“We feel like our guys have done a good job growing. I think that the physicality that we had in camp let us see where we stand,” Montgomery said. “Our guys are still learning how to practice, and there were a lot of things I was fired up to see as the week went on.”
Now, the Greyhounds get to see how they stack up against Mary Persons, a program used to being in the hunt for region titles and vying for deep postseason pushes in recent seasons. The Bulldogs were region champions and state quarterfinalists two seasons ago. The two teams also scrimmaged before last season in a game cut short by weather.
“I just want to see how we handle competition, as a team and as individuals,” Montgomery said. “We want to have a good evaluation going into the season and see how well we can execute us, that’s the name of the game.”
