With a new head coach in place, the first half of the summer has been a bit of acclimation for Greyhounds bench boss Willie Reese as he takes over for a team coming off two state tournament appearances in a row.
JCHS spent a good part of June making its run through the camp and scrimmage circuit, going against outside competition at camps staged by those including Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Georgia Southern.
Reese concedes that, while there are some key learnings from the scrimmage portion of the offseason, it’s not the be-all end-all of things.
“It’s a little too early, just because June is such a rushed month,” Reese said. “July will help us a lot. We won’t be as worried about scrimmaging. It’ll be more about screens and cuts.”
And with players adapting to a new system, zeroing in on the intricate details may be more key than in most years.
“These kids are working hard. We have a good chance to be a really solid team,” Reese said. “We just have to get some technical stuff down because it’s a new system for them. I like what I’ve seen, though.”
Overall, from June and looking ahead of July after this week’s dead period, the Greyhounds new head coach likes what he is seeing.
“I think we’re athletic,” Reese said. “I’ve got a pretty good solid core coming back.”
