Rested Greyhounds, Lady Hounds embark on postseason

GREYHOUND BASKETBALL

How much does rest mean entering a postseason? The Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds entered the week with the chance to either prove or disprove that theory.

Last week and going into Sunday, the region that both teams match up with in the first round of the state tournament contested its region tournament. Jones County, on the other hand, had the benefit of rest. Since its region tournament was last week, one of the earliest in the state, both teams were able to rest up from minor injuries and work on fine tuning things.

“We have a bit longer time off,” Lady Greyhounds head coach ChoRhonda Gwaltney-Harris said. “We have some things to clean up. You have all the week to do that.”

Both teams opened the state tourney this week, the Greyhounds at Bradwell Institute and the Lady Hounds going to Ware County. Both opponents won their respective regions, priming JCHS into a position to pull an upset.

As for their opponents? They wrapped up their region tournament Saturday, giving them as few days four days to rest up compared to the more than week and a half that the Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds had in their hands.

“At this point, it just depends on your mentality,” Greyhounds head coach Buck Harris said.

Both teams will remain on the road with a first-round win. The Greyhounds-Bradwell Institute winner plays either Tucker or Northgate on Friday or Saturday with a win by the Lady Hounds matching them up against either Arabia Mountain or McIntosh.
