Spring sports in home stretch of postseason push

PLAYOFF ROUNDUP

With spring break over for Jones County, the push toward the postseason continues for various Greyhound and Lady Greyhound teams and individuals.

On the tennis court, both the Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds began the week with the opportunity to not just advance to the state tournament but also possibly host a firstround match. Both have been within the top four of the region this season with the Lady Hounds relying on experience to win a majority of their region matches. Firstround state tournament matches must be completed no later than April 20.

In track and field, Zion Ragins is in hot pursuit of a third 100-meter run state title in a row. But as the season leads toward the May 11-13 state championships, held in Columbus for AAAAA schools, Tyler Stewart’s recent personal bests have him in the running to make a charge in addition to the Greyhounds and Lady Greyhounds proven strength in running events by way of runners like Camryn Womack, Lilly Palmer, Luke Thornton, Tyler Marshall and Austin Sullivan.

On the baseball diamond, the Greyhounds postseason fate will likely be decided this week based on how Dutchtown fares against Union Grove. As the week began, the Greyhounds region record was 6-6 to the 3-8 of the Bulldogs. But with Jones County playing firstplace Locust Grove this week and Union Grove taking on last-place Eagles Landing next week, the Bulldogs being able to take two of three against Union Grove and sweeping Eagles Landing would force a tie for fourth in the standings, assuming JCHS sweeps Warner Robins next week.

Whether the fourth-place finisher in the region is Dutchtown or Jones County, that team would likely open the state playoffs at Greenbrier of Augusta.

In golf, the state tournament for AAAAA teams will once again be on a road that goes through Waycross, with Ware County hosting sectionals. Top qualifiers there will advance to the state tournament May 22-23, where Cartersville will host the boys event and girls at Calhoun.

The Lady Hounds have shown strong play with Keegan Goins and Kimber Kent posting strong scores, and if the two can turn in similar rounds, they have chance to return Jones County to the state tourney again, where the Lady Hounds were seventh a season ago.
