Augusta National Golf Club will command the attention of the golf universe with The Masters this week, but local impact on the links made its way to Jones County earlier this week.
Lake Jonesco Golf Course hosted a tournament Monday to benefit the Fallen Hero Foundation. After a day full of golf, beautiful weather, a four-person scramble format and even someone nailing a hole-in-one, more than $15,000 was raised for Fallen Hero, an organization that, through the Georgia Public Safety Memorial Wall, recognizes Georgia law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, EMTs and emergency management personnel who have lost their loves while on duty.
The tournament was an idea hatched by multiple individuals from Jones County who are part of a certified public manager program through the Georgia Public Safety Training Center (GPSTC) and chose the tournament as a service learning project.
“It was a collective effort from our class,” Jones County Parks & Recreation Director Bert Rosenberger said. “Everyone helped get sponsors and teams. It all turned out great, and a bunch of money was raised.”
Rosenberger is hopeful that the tournament will continue next year with the next CPM class and with a challenge for next year’s event to raise even more money than this year’s.
Monday’s hardly the spring’s final tourney at Lake Jonesco, which hosts its Sheriff’s Tournament next Monday.
