Volley Hounds begin season with pair of wins

VOLLEY HOUNDS

FORSYTH - The Lady Greyhounds began their season last week with a pair of match victories, taking one win against a determined opponent and another being the first-ever win against an opponent faced multiple times in the past.

The Volley Hounds won twice in a tri-match last Tuesday in Forsyth, holding off the Bulldogs to win 25-16 and 25-23. Jones County turned around and made program history after that, taking down Ace Charter 25-22 and 25-10 for its first win in team history against the Gryphons.

“I was super-proud of them.

They showed a lot of good teamwork. That was the best thing,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Kim Hanner said.

After the 25-16 win against the Bulldogs, Isabella Bodnarchuk helped seal the 25-23, getting the final two service points in the 25-23 win.

JCHS got a strong start against the Gryphons, going to an 8-1 lead before Ace rallied to trail 11-10. After the Lady Hounds bounced back to lead 18-12 and then to an 20-14 advantage, they had to counter another opposing charge, having the lead cut to 22-20 before closing out the 25-22 win.

In the second game, Jones County led early again, going ahead 14-6 and eventually 24-8 after seven service points in a row by Bodnarchuk. That was plenty of cushion for the Volley Hounds, who’d win 25-10.

“She did a great job for us, Caroline Rickman came in on the back row for us and did some really good things,” Hanner said. “We have six seniors, but it’s exciting to know our younger kids can play on that level.”

JCHS got plenty of court time during Saturday’s Southside Classic in Locust Grove, facing three teams. The Lady Hounds lost 25-13 and 25-8 to unbeaten Union Grove, 25-13 and 25-10 to Fayette County and 25-13 and 25-9 to Mary Persons.

More tournament play is on deck for JCHS on Saturday at a tournament hosted by FPD with scheduled matches against Covenant Academy, FPD and Jackson.
