This August will mark the fifth season of volleyball for the Lady Greyhounds as a program. Although the opening of that season may be a few months away, an important first step was taken last week with the Volley Hounds spanning across the JCHS gymnasium for three days of tryouts.
All told, 63 players were on the floor as tryouts began prior to that number of players being whittled down to rosters for one varsity and a junior varsity squad for the fall.
That enthusiasm is a two-sided coin for the Lady Hounds. While it does show excitement about the present and future of volleyball in Jones County, it also meant that not everyone trying out made the final roster.
“We had 63 student-athletes come out here on the first day, so we’re super-excited about the future of the program with that amount of interest,” Lady Greyhounds head coach Kim Hanner said. “At the same time, it’s hard to hurt the feelings of people, too. It’s a good problem to have, for sure.”
Hanner said that, while this year will be limited to fielding just a varsity and JV team, hopes going forward are to expand to having either at ninth-grade or middleschool team added.
