One of Jones County’s newes authors, Dorothy Combs, had a book signing at Greenwood Baptist Church May 7 to promote her book Holy Spirit Calling.
Combs said she was born in South Georgia and her husband Richard was born in Oklahoma City. She said they met in Okinawa, Japan. She said she was working for Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington D.C., and a program she managed took her to Okinawa. She said she needed to see the comptroller, and Richard was the comptroller. The author said it was love at first sight.
“We’ve been in Jones County since 2005. Grandchildren brought us here,” she said. “I really enjoy going to church at Greenwood Baptist Church. I’m teaching the most lovely Sunday school class. All my friends are here.”
She said she was excited for her book signing and to promote her book. She said she really wanted to get the word out about her devotional book, because she wants everyone to know God.
“God called me to write a book about five years ago, so I got all my commentaries out and put them on the table to tr to write. It just would not come to me, then two years lapsed. God then said to get a pen and a piece of paper, and every morning during my devotional He would tell me what to write. That happened every morning until He was ready for it to be over,” Combs said.
The author said once she was done, she typed everything up and looked up scripture to support what she had wrote down. She said she sent the book to a publisher, but it wasn’t accepted. She said she wasn’t done yet, though. She said God finally sent her the right publisher.
“We’ve been doing all we could to spread God’s Word. That’s what it’s really about. It’s not about the money,” she said. “It’s about telling people about the Holy Spirit, because so many people don’t understand the Holy Spirit.”
Combs’s husband said the Holy Spirit is what guides everyone.
“She truly would go sit and write it. She would go into the family room, and just start writing. She would write until she was finished for the day. Sometimes she’d sit in there and wouldn’t write anything,” he said.
The wife said her husband is a great chef, and he really takes great care of her. The author said she thinks her book of is important for everyone.
“That’s because I want them to know more about the Holy Spirit,” she said. “I’ve had friends who have had the book for a few months, and they just really enjoy it.”
Combs said it took her about six months to write Holy Spirit Calling, but then it took even longer to get the book published. She said it took about five months with the publisher. She said she was happy to be at the book signing to share the Holy Spirit with others.
“My favorite thing is that God trusted me and called on me to do this.” she said. “That means a lot to me that He wanted me to write this book. That’s exactly what I did.”
