HISTORY & HERITAGE
On the rainy afternoon of March 9, 32 alumni, friends and family members of the Griswold School gathered at the newly erected historical marker for Griswold School. Due to the rain, visitors got a glimpse of the marker and then were directed to Pitts Chapel Church, where its kind members allowed the group to properly perform the marker dedication.
One may consider the rain a God send as the comfort of the church allowed time for guests to recount memories of the school and its teachers. Kay Kelly gave a wonderful recap of the school and teachers, and Cecil Ethridge presented the group with additional information including a copy of the marker’s scripted information. Pictures and yearbooks were shared among the group and what may have been a brief, on sight dedication lasted for over an hour.
The Griswold School marker is one of ten markers that have been placed by Jones County History and Heritage, Inc. since 2007, all of which can be seen on the Jones County History and Heritage website.
A dedication of the marker for the community of Juliette is scheduled to be held on April 13th at 6:00 p.m. The marker is located in Juliette at the cemetery on J.H. Aldridge Drive.
