Crime Watch

The following information is gleaned from incident reports, which are public record, from the Jones County Sheriff’s Department and Gray Police Department Sept. 3-5, 2022.

Sept. 3

Deputy Robinson was patrolling the area of GA Hwy. 49 when he observed a vehicle with no headlights on and it was dark at the time.

Robinson conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. Robinson made contact with driver, and the driver advised he was not aware his headlights were not on. The deputy noticed the driver’s speech seemed to be slow and slurred. When Robinson asked the driver for his license, he pulled out his wallet and overlooked his license several times before handing it over to the deputy.

At this point, Robinson asked the driver if he had consumed any alcohol, and the driver advised he had one drink and he was heading home from a family reunion. The deputy asked the driver to step out of the vehicle to see if he would be ok to drive. When the driver stepped out, he appeared to be unsteady on his feet. Robinson also noted the driver had a hard time understanding simple commands such as where to stand and he would appear to be confused. The driver agreed to give a roadside breath test which showed positive for alcohol. Prior to blowing in the roadside alco sensor, the driver also urinated on himself. At this time, the driver was placed in handcuffs and transported to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office and issued two citations for DUI less safe alcohol and headlight requirements. The subject was then turned over to jail staff for processing.

Sept. 4

Sgt. Carr was monitoring traffic on Hwy. 44 when he ran a GA tag to check for valid insurance and registration.

The in-car computer alerted the sargeant that the registered owner of the vehicle had a suspended license. Carr activated his blue lights and conducted a traffic stop at that time. Carr approached the driver and asked about her license status. The driver told the sargeant she did not realize her license was suspended.

Dispatch confirmed the suspension. Carr secured the driver in handcuffs and transported her to the Jones County LEC where she was given a citation for driving while license suspended then turned over to jail staff for booking.

Sept. 5

Sgt. Little was conducting stationary radar checks at the intersection of the Bypass and Oliver Green Road when he observed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Little activated his radar, and it showed the vehicle speed was 80 mph in a 60-mph zone. The sargeant conducted a traffic stop at this time. When Little made contact with the driver, he asked for the driver’s license and the driver advised Little that he did not have a license.

Little verified the information, and the driver was arrested for driving while unlicensed and transported to the Jones County LEC.
