Bond was denied a Macon man who was arrested in Jones County while already being on bond for a previous Jones County drug charge.
James Dewey Jones Jr., 46, was in Jones County Superior Court Sept. 15 seeking bond. Jones was arrested for drug possession Feb. 20 and was indicted by a Grand Jury April 5 on the charge of possession of schedule I controlled substance with intent to distribute.
Superior Court Judge Terry Massey denied the bond request citing the consideration that Jones posed a significant threat or danger to another person, the community or to property in the community pending trial.
Jones was represented in the bond motion by Defense attorney Todd Stannis. The attorney said his firm was originally appointed to represent the defendant as conflict counsel.
Stannis said Jones had been waiting for a bond since his Feb. 20 arrest. He added that Jones has been trying to get on disability due to several medical issues.
“He had a relapse of his drug use when his mother died,” Stannis said.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Cara Fiore. She told the court that Jones was a defendant in Jones County’s 2021 Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act case that had 103 defendants.
“He was a Tier 2 defendant in the case, not just a user,” she said.
Fiore said Jones was out on bond for the RICO case when he was arrested for his most recent offense in February. The prosecutor said the defendant has an extensive criminal history and is not a good candidate for bond. Massey agreed.
