Guilty plea leads to 1-year sentence for shots fired

A domestic dispute that escalated to shots fired was resolved in Jones County Superior Court with time served and a probated sentence.

Semaj Ingram entered guilty pleas in two cases April 15. He received 12 months on probation in the first case of reckless conduct. The defendant was sentenced to 12 months each in the most recent case for the lesser-included offense of criminal trespass and simple battery family violence.

All counts are to run concurrently for the total of 12 months with the first 90 days to serve. The remainder of sentence is to be served on probation. The sentences in both cases are also to run concurrently.

A report of Ingram’s arrest by Gray Police Officer Mitch Lovick stated he responded to a shots fired call March 9 on Bateman Lane at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The officer said, upon his arrival, the complainant said Ingram shot at her during an argument and then fled the scene on foot. Lovick said he was joined at the scene by GPD officers Josh Josey and Terius Farley.

The victim told Lovick she and Ingram were arguing about a missing phone, and he went to his room. She said when she turned the corner to go to her room, she heard two gunshots from the bottom of the stairs.

The officer said the victim told him she believed Ingram used a family member’s derringer handgun. Lovick said, while they were talking, he heard a commotion outside. He made contact with Josey and Farley, who had found Ingram behind the crawl space door that led under the house.

Lovick said the suspect did not resist arrest and had the derringer on his person.

Farley transported Ingram to the Jones County Law Enforcement Center, and Lovick said he took possession of the firearm to place in evidence. He said two spent shell casings remained in the handgun.

The officer said he also took pictures of bullet holes that were in the walls of the stairwell and adjoining room.

Lovick said he later met with Ingram at the jail. He said the suspect was served with a warrant for two counts of aggravated assault and opted not to speak with him.

Ingram was on bond at the time of his arrest for a Aug. 26, 2021, criminal damage to property charge.
