Byron Thompson is the local veteran of the week. He joined the naval reserve while still in high school, February 1955 until December 1959. He volunteered for the U.S. Army draft in January 1960, then completed basic training at Fort Benning and advanced training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. He attended engineering school at Fort Belvoir, Virginia; his combat engineering group was transferred to Germany in August 1961. He was honorably discharged in April 1963.
